Agnieszka Pomaska participated in a debate marking the 22nd anniversary of Poland’s membership in the European Union, organized by the European Commission. The discussion brought together experts and panelists and was moderated by Jakub Wiech.
Participants emphasized that Poland’s EU membership is no longer perceived solely in terms of closing the developmental gap with Western Europe. Increasingly, it serves as a starting point for discussions on Poland’s role in shaping the future of Europe.
It was noted that for the younger generation, EU membership is a given; therefore, the Union must respond to new expectations extending beyond economic development to include security, stability, and a tangible influence on international affairs.
The debate also highlighted that Poland’s strong position in Europe stems from its active participation in decision-making processes. Contemporary understandings of sovereignty are grounded in co-decision and the joint development of solutions within the European Union framework.
The discussion further addressed the future of the EU, which today extends beyond economic considerations to encompass security, resilience to crises, and the shared responsibility of Member States.
Participants agreed that sustained public support for Poland’s EU membership requires an informed and substantive dialogue about its significance, alongside a clear emphasis that the European Union is a community co-created by its citizens.
