„A Strong Europe in a Changing World” – Denmark’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union

2025-07-04

On July 1, 2025, Denmark assumed the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, succeeding Poland, which chaired the Council’s work in the first half of the year.

The official commencement of the Presidency took place in Aarhus, where Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the importance of a strong and united Europe in the face of global challenges. Denmark’s Presidency is conducted under the motto “A Strong Europe in a Changing World” and focuses on security, migration, economic transformation, and further European integration.

On July 4, 2025, the first meeting of the Chairs of Parliamentary Committees on European Union Affairs took place, attended by the trio leaders from Poland – Agnieszka Pomaska, Cyprus, and Denmark. This meeting was crucial for presenting and discussing the main priorities of the Danish Presidency and coordinating actions with Member States. Key topics included strengthening the common defense policy, enhancing cooperation on migration, and advancing the green economic transition.

During its Presidency in the first half of 2025, Poland, together with Denmark, developed strategic goals and priorities which will continue to be implemented under Danish leadership:

  • Strengthening the EU’s common defense policy, including increasing military capabilities and supporting Ukraine.

  • Effective management of migration through border protection, improved asylum procedures, and return systems.

  • Promoting green transformation and innovation, simplifying regulations, and developing digitalization.

  • Supporting the EU enlargement process with Ukraine, Moldova, and the Western Balkans.

  • Enhancing internal security and combating organized crime.

  • Negotiating the EU budget with a focus on financing defense, innovation, and environmental initiatives.

The first meeting under Denmark’s Presidency marked a significant step towards the implementation of these priorities. Close cooperation with Poland within the trio Presidency ensures the coherence of the Council’s work and strengthens the EU’s position on the international stage.

Denmark will hold the Presidency until the end of 2025, after which Cyprus will assume the role.
