Debate on Europe’s Strategic Autonomy Ahead of the Ukraine Recovery Conference

2026-06-24

Agnieszka Pomaska participated in “Leaders Forum: On the Road to URC – Thinking on the Strategic Autonomy of Europe,” an official side event of the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC).

The workshop was held in an innovative format aboard a train travelling from Warsaw to Gdańsk. Its purpose was to present representatives of public administration, business, academia, and the diplomatic community with the key conclusions developed during two major international events preceding the Ukraine Recovery Conference.

The first of these was the Leaders Forum Better Europe, which brought together opinion leaders, experts, and representatives of leading think tanks from European Union Member States and partner countries. Discussions focused on the future of the European Union in the context of its forthcoming enlargements. The second event, the European Town Hall on URC, gathered young leaders from across Europe to exchange views on Ukraine’s future and present proposals supporting the country’s reconstruction.

A central element of the programme was a discussion on Europe’s strategic autonomy. As Chair of the Committee on European Union Affairs, Agnieszka Pomaska joined Dr. Małgorzata Bonikowska, President of the Centre for International Relations, in examining the challenges facing Europe in the areas of security, economic resilience, and the development of the capacity to respond independently to contemporary crises.

The programme also featured the presentation of public opinion research, prepared by the PZU Foundation and the Centre for International Relations, examining the views of Polish citizens on the reconstruction of Ukraine and the country’s future.

The event provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives and discuss Europe’s role in strengthening security, promoting stability, and supporting Ukraine as it continues its path toward deeper integration with the European community.
