‘Safety, Europe!’ – the slogan of the Polish Presidency resounded particularly solemnly today in the building of the Grand Theatre – National Opera, where the opening ceremony of the Polish Presidency of the EU Council was held. Speakers at the ceremony included Prime Minister Donald Tusk and the President of the European Council Antonio Costa, with whom the head of government had earlier met at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. The seven pillars of security are the signposts that will help Poland lead Europe towards a stable future.
The Opening Gala of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU, held at the Grand Theatre – National Opera, was a moment of Poland’s symbolic commitment to lead the European Union in efforts to ensure the security of the entire continent.
The solemn ceremony began with the playing of the Polish national anthem and an address by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The Head of Government recalled that this year we are celebrating the 1000th anniversary of the coronation of the first Polish king, Bolesław Chrobry. These 1,000 years are the history of Polish development, as well as of learning from our own mistakes.
‘The Polish Presidency is there to use our national wisdom, our national experience,’ said the Prime Minister.
Speaking about Poland’s plans for the Presidency, Donald Tusk referred to the Latin maxim ‘Nec temere, nec timide’.
‘Courageously and prudently’ – this was also the call of the great Solidarity movement, which is one of the foundations of modern Europe. The word ‘solidarity’ means perhaps more today than at any time in the history of post-war Europe. And Poland will be the guardian of that solidarity,’ the Prime Minister stressed.
The President of the European Council spoke after the head of the Polish government.
‘Poland is one of the greatest successes in the history of the Community’s enlargement and the best geostrategic investment made by Europe, which made it possible to guarantee freedom and democracy after long periods marked by totalitarian regimes,’ Antonio Costa recalled.
Today’s ceremony was marked by a concert of musicians from the Orchestra and Choir of the Grand Theatre – National Opera under the baton of conductor Radzimir Debski. The renowned composer composed a new piece for the occasion, which is a story about Polish identity.
