EPP Statutory Congress in Bonn

Agnieszka Pomaska together with the Polish delegation of The Civic Platform Party attended last week’s EPP Statutory Congress in Bonn, Germany.

Hosted by German Chancellor Angela MERKEL and the re-elected EPP President Wilfried MARTENS, the Congress adopted many resolutions and a key new document on the Social Market Economy. In addition the EPP Congress elected its new Presidency.

The EPP concluded its second and final day of its Congress proceedings in Bonn at the historic old Bundestag building. Over 1500 delegates from 71 parties and 39 European countries attended, as well as hundreds of international guests from across the world.

This major European political gathering featured speeches by Commission President Jose Manuel BARROSO, Council nominated President Herman VAN ROMPUY and Parliament President Jerzy BUZEK as well as speeches from 12 EU heads of state and government: Fredrik REINFELDT, Francois FILLON, Jan Peter BALKENENDE, Silvio BERLUSCONI, Traian BASESCU, Boyko BORISOV, Valdis DOMBROVSKIS, Lawrence GONZI, Jean-Claude JUNCKER, Yves LETERME, Donald TUSK, and closed with a keynote speech from German Chancellor Angela MERKEL.

The following candidates were elected to the new EPP Presidency:

The EPP Congress adopted its new document on the Social Market Economy, which is intended to help kick-start the recovery from the current economic and financial crisis in Europe. All the documents and resolutions adopted at the EPP Statutory Congress in Bonn can be found on www.eppbonn2009.eu .

The second day of the Congress was also attended by the Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament Joseph DAUL, Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka KOSOR, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia TYMOSHENKO, Albanian Prime Minister Sali BERISHA, FYROM Prime Minister Nikola GRUEVSKI, Georgian President Mikheil SAAKASHVILI, Minister-President of Bavaria and CSU leader Horst SEEHOFER, Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia Jürgen RÜTTGERS, Deputy Prime Minister Jyrki KATAINEN (KOK, Finland), Mariano RAJOY (PP, Spain), Antonis SAMARAS (ND, Greece), Manuela FERREIRO LEITE (PSD, Portugal), Mikuláš DZURINDA (SDKÚ-DS, Slovakia), Viktor ORBÁN (Fidesz, Hungary), Nicos ANASTASIADES (DISY, Cyprus), Janez JANŠA (SDS, Slovenia) and numerous other leading European political figures.

Many members of the recently nominated Barroso II Commission also attended the Congress: Viviane REDING, Vice President, responsible for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, Antonio TAJANI, Vice President, responsible for Industry and Entrepreneurship, Michel BARNIER, Internal Market and Services, Andris PIEBALGS, Development and Rumiana JELEVA, International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response.

Finally, after the Congress, EPP President Wilfried MARTENS hosted in Bonn the regular EPP Summit of heads of state and government to prepare the EU Council Summit in Brussels, which will start later this evening. All EU and non-EU heads of state and government and party leaders of the EPP attended the Summit.
