Chairperson of the Parliamentary European Union Affairs Committee Agnieszka Pomaska is going to participate in the International Parliamentary Conference „Georgia before the Vilnius Summit: Role of the Parliament in EU Integration Process”, which will be held in Tbilisi, from 5 to 8 October 2013.

SESSION I GEORGIA’S COMMITMENTS ON ITS EUROPEAN PATH

A year has passed since the first peaceful transfer of power in Georgia as a result of October 2012 parliamentary elections. Despite the challenges brought about by the new political setting, the Parliament has succeeded in achieving cooperation on key issues on the agenda, including the changes to the Constitution, adoption of the Parliament’s Resolution on Foreign Policy directions, etc. The First Session of the Conference will respectively provide opportunity to present these and other achievements in the light of Georgia-EU relations, with particular focus on the progress towards EU law harmonization process, finalization of negotiations on DCFTA and Association Agreement, preparations for the Vilnius Summit, cooperation within the formats of parliamentary diplomacy. The Session will also highlight those challenges that lie ahead in the process of democratization and further approximation of Georgia to Europe.

SESSION II SHARING EXPERIENCE OF EU MEMBER COUNTRIES: ROLE OF THE PARLIAMENT IN EU INTEGRATION PROCESSES

Although the Government of Georgia is taking the lead in Georgia-EU relations, Parliament, based on its policy-making and oversight function, plays an important role in the EU integration processes. With the approach and especially in the aftermath of the Vilnius Summit, the role of the Parliament becomes even more crucial and the need for strengthening its capacities increases. Respectively, the Second Session of the Conference will be dedicated to the experience-sharing of the parliaments of EU member states on the role of the parliament in EU integration process, effective coordination mechanisms with the government and the best tools of parliamentary oversight. Addressing the challenges in the law harmonization process, role of the EU Committees in raising public awareness about EU and cooperation with EU member states will be also discussed during the Session.
