Cyprus assumes the Presidency of the European Union. Key budget decisions ahead.

2026-01-05

On 1 January, Cyprus assumed the six-month Presidency of the Council of the European Union, taking responsibility for coordinating the EU’s legislative and political work at one of the most challenging moments in recent years.

Cyprus’s presidency will coincide with crucial negotiations on the new European Union budget, which will determine the directions of EU financing in the coming years. These talks will be of fundamental importance for future investments, common policies and the Union’s ability to respond effectively to crises.

The main priorities of the Cypriot presidency include:

  • security and defence of the European Union, including strengthening the EU’s resilience and its capacity to respond to external threats,

  • a competitive economy based on innovation, stability and a stronger single market,

  • international cooperation, with particular emphasis on relations with neighbouring countries and the EU’s strategic partners.

Cyprus has announced that its presidency will focus on building a stronger, more resilient and outward-looking European Union, capable of acting effectively both in economic and geopolitical terms.
