Security and Shared Responsibility – Meeting with the EU Commissioner for Defence

2025-09-25

On 25 September, a meeting took place between Agnieszka Pomaska and Andrius Kubilius, the current European Commissioner for Defence and Airspace. The discussion focused on the most pressing security challenges and the future development of the EU’s common defence policy.

The Commissioner presented key initiatives aimed at strengthening Europe’s defence capabilities, including:

  • The White Paper “Readiness 2030” – a strategic document setting out priorities and reinforcing cooperation with NATO.

  • The Rearm Europe Plan – providing for increased investment in the European defence industry and joint procurement, enabling faster replenishment of stockpiles and the modernisation of member states’ armed forces.

  • The SAFE Instrument – under which Poland has already received €43.7 billion, making it the largest beneficiary of the programme.

Another important point of discussion was support for Ukraine – ranging from the EUMAM training missions to long-term security guarantees.

It was emphasised that the common defence policy has not only a military dimension but also an economic one. It opens up new opportunities for Polish companies in the defence sector, while at the same time strengthening the unity and resilience of the entire Union in the face of contemporary threats.

The meeting concluded with the shared understanding that a stronger Europe means a shared responsibility for the security of its citizens and the development of a modern defence industry.
