On Wednesday (08.01), a joint meeting of the Sejm’s European Union Affairs and Foreign Affairs Committees was attended by leaders of the Belarusian opposition, led by the Chairperson of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus, Svitlana Tikhanouska.
– In February, Gdansk will host the Kosciuszko Forum, which will be the most important event on human rights and civil liberties in Belarus during the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU. We want a clear signal to go out from Gdansk – a city of freedom and solidarity – to the whole world that Belarus is exceptionally important for all of us. It is a question of the future of Europe,’ said Chairwoman of the Parliamentary Commission for European Union Affairs Agnieszka Pomaska.
Brutal repression of citizens demanding freedom and justice has been taking place in Belarus for years. The actions of the authorities against the opposition, journalists or ordinary demonstrators are not only a violation of international standards, but also of the basic principles of human dignity. Support for the Belarusian opposition is an expression of solidarity with those who are risking their lives and safety while fighting for a better future.
A democratic Belarus is an opportunity to reduce the influence of Russia in the region and to have better relations with its neighbours, including Poland and the European Union.
