Piotr Serafin has received a positive opinion from the Sejm’s EU affairs committee as a Polish candidate for commissioner at the European Commission for the 2024-2029 term. ‘The key issues in European policy in the coming years are security, a competitive economy and transatlantic relations,’ Serafin stressed.
The candidacy of Serafin, currently acting Polish representative to the EU, was put forward by Prime Minister Donald Tusk and has also already received the legally required approval of President Andrzej Duda.
Twenty members of the European Union Affairs Committee voted in favour of Serafin’s candidacy, 12 voted against. Earlier in the discussion, the Minister for EU Affairs Adam Szłapka, representing the government, emphasised that Serafin is one of the most experienced Polish diplomats working in EU structures and enjoys great authority in Brussels. Moreover, said Szłapka, Serafin is a politician capable of working out a compromise on difficult issues, while at the same time fighting for the interests of his country.
Speaking at the committee meeting, Serafin recalled that what area he will be responsible for if he becomes a member of the EC has not yet been decided; therefore, he presented the most important general aspects that he believes will be crucial for European policy in the coming years. Serafin recalled that, in addition to dealing with his or her area of responsibility, each Commissioner is a member of the College, which participates jointly in key decisions.
